After a year off, I decided to participate fully in the RPM Challenge again in 2011. The theme this year was my home city of Minneapolis, inspired by an archival stereoscopic photo I discovered on Wikimedia Commons.
Musically the album is diverse as usual, with a mix of rock, electronic music and funk, and featuring more prominent vocals than in any of my previous work. (Which is not to say the vocals are prominent… just more prominent.) Influences include LCD Soundsystem, early Prince, Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk, early King Crimson and… the Beach Boys. (Yeah. Vocals.)
Conceptually, the album depicts a night traveling around the city: first exploring the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden and then heading southward as evening sets on, eventually arriving on the north side at dawn.
After nearly a year of careful listening, a project to remix and remaster all of the tracks on the album began in November 2011 and was completed in January 2012.
